Comments on James Mill (1844) is a short unpublished early text by Karl Marx, written as a series of notes on James Mill's Elements of Political Economy (1821), of which Marx had a 1823 French translation by J. T. Parisot. It is the longest series of comments among his Paris Notebooks, and deals with a number of topics not further elaborated in his Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts. Some have suggested that it offers a glimpse of the subjects treated in the lost second manuscript of this work.
Contents
The text includes two lengthy digressions by Marx elaborating his personal thoughts.
The first of these concerns the nature of money as a medium of circulation.
The second of these concerns the form of commodity exchange and how it relates to alienation.
