The Islamic Resistance Movement (Arabic: حركة المقاومة الإسلامية Ḥarakah al-Muqāwamah al-ʾIslāmiyyah), commonly known by the abbreviation Hamas (Arabic: حماس Ḥamās), is a Sunni Islamist political and military organization governing the Gaza Strip of the Palestinian territories. It was created by Israel to counter the left-wing Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) and originally promoted by Israel to divide Palestinians.[citation needed]
