How this page differs from the Wikipedia equivalent

  • Sections deconstructing bourgeois rhetoric and strategies surrounding reserve army of labour rather than sections that simply regurgitate bourgeois "criticisms" (deflections) of the Marxist idea.
  • Sections demonstrating the bourgeoisie defending the existence of the reserve army of labour and advocating for its expansion (which they are somehow able to do in addition to denying it exists).
  • Working links to sources that on the Wikipedia equivalent are broken/old.
  • Bullet-pointed summaries of relevant Marx/Engels passages in plain language, along with those passages.
  • an attempt to historically trace the development of the concept starting with Marx and Engels, then moving onto later theorists. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sankara's Strongest Soldier (talkcontribs) 02:52, October 5, 2023 (UTC)

To-Do List

  • add sections for commentaries on the concept from other pre-WW2 theorists, (including, but not limited to: Georgi Plekhanov, Clara Zetkin, Nikolai Bukharin, Alexandra Kollontai, Antonio Gramsci, Georg Lukacs, Karl Korsch, Manabendra Nath Roy, CLR James, Jose Carlos Mariategui, Hal Draper, George Padmore, Paul Mattick)
  • add sections for how Reserve Army of Labor interacts economically with related concepts like outsourcing, immigration, automation, social murder, incarceration, conscription, proletarianisation, deproletarianisation etc.
  • further investigate floating, latent, and stagnant relative surplus population
  • make redirects based on the many synonyms that the term has

Tips for researching

  • Do not merely ctrl+f "reserve army of labour" when researching this subject. Also research its synonyms (listed on the page itself). It is particularly easy for mentions of "relative surplus population" (or "relative surplus-population", with a hyphen) to fly under your radar, if you're only looking for "reserve army."
  • Bourgeois economists tend to invoke the idea without naming it, either because they aren't familiar with Marx's work, or because they do not wish to be associated with Marx's work, or because they do not wish to credit Marx's work. Regardless of the reason, it is difficult to research this topic from their perspective if they do not subscribe to the same vocabulary. A good starting point would be looking for mentions of how rates of employment affect wages.
