The French Revolution was a series of events beginning in 1789 and affecting France and its colonies. It ended the Ancien Régime, a system of absolute monarchy which had lasted in France since the 15th century. It established the First French Republic, which was eventually replaced by the First French Empire under Napoléon I.

It was a major turning point that set in motion countless other events in Europe and around the world. It is also considered, in the Marxist view, to constitute a bourgeois-democratic revolution (as it was led by the so-called "Tiers état" or "Third estate", which refers to the commoner French who were not part of the clergy or nobility).
