He was born on 3rd of December 1934 in Mollendo.
 
Before founding PCP - Sendero Luminoso, Guzmán was employed as a professor of philosophy at San Cristóbal of Huamanga University. His stay in Ayacucho was the first time Abimael came in contact with poor, indigenous peasants in the Andes. His lectures often served purpose of agitation, as communist ideology was often discussed. A member of the Communist Party of Peru, he twice visited China under Mao Zedong. As a result, Guzmán took a pro-China and anti-revisionist stance as an defender of Mao and building of socialism.
 
Chairman Gonzalo took lead of Maoist faction which split from the PCP in 1969, and at the university he expanded structures made up of students and officials.
 
In 1982 armed wing of the PCP - Shining Path, People's Guerilla Army (Spanish: Ejército Guerrillero Popular) started what was essentially People's War; 10 years of communist struggle against Peru's government and other militias at the time (Shining Path often combated other leftist organisations). Abimael Guzmán himself went underground until 1992, when he was captured.
