After the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the fall of the Eastern Bloc in 1989-91, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), an anti-communist and anti-Soviet imperialist alliance, continued to exist, rapidly expanding its membership and influence into eastern and southern Europe. Weakened ex-socialist states have been incorporated into the influence of NATO as well as the European Union, and NATO continues to exercise influence around the world.
