François-Noël Babeuf, better known as Gracchus Babeuf, was a revolutionary and political theorist from the French Revolutionary era. Babeuf was honored by Marx and other 19th century leftists as a progenitor to anarchism, socialism, and communism. His nickname comes from the brothers Gracchi, two radical reformers from the Roman Republican era who were killed by aristocratic elements.
