The flag of the former Soviet Union changed frequently. For example, the 1924 flag has a different hammer and sickle from the more iconic 1955 version.

History of the National flag of the Soviet Union

The first ever flag of the Soviet Union originally only had a red background and the coat of arms.

12 November 1923 the flag design was changed into a more recognisable red and gold flag with a hammer and Sickle and star with in a box the design is mostly inspired by the Russian SFSR.

On 18 April 1924 the flag was changed into a more appealing design which removed the box and changed the hammer and Sickle but kept the Star.

5 December 1936 the hammer and Sickle was changed.

Note) this is the same flags that was used in World War II and the great patriotic War.

The famous flag that was flown over the Reichstag is a modification of the national flag with a star that is completely yellow and the flag itself is more smaller.

On 19 August 1955 The flag was completely changed the hammer and Sickle is a smaller and this is the flag most people associate with the Soviet Union and socialism.
