West Germany is a colloquial term for the Federal Republic of Germany (German: Bundesrepublik Deutschland, or BRD) as it existed during the Cold War. The BRD annexed East Germany in 1990, becoming the modern German state.
The United States incorporated large elements of the Nazi state into the state machine of the new republic, including in top intelligence positions.
