There were many communist (actually socialist) governments in the 20th century, more than in any other century. The following article is intended as a list and analysis of these governments. Do note that many of the countries listed are or were not necessarily of the socialist mode of production.

Africa
- People's Republic of Mozambique (República Popular de Moçambique) — until 1990
- People's Republic of Angola (República Popular de Angola) — until 1992
- People's Republic of Benin (République populaire du Bénin) — until 1990
- People's Republic of the Congo (République populaire du Congo) — until 1992
- People's Democratic Republic of Algeria — still exists, became a liberal democracy
- People's Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (ye-Ītyōppyā Hezbāwī Dīmōkrāsīyāwī Rīpeblīk) — until 1991
- Somali Democratic Republic (Jamhuuriyadda Dimuqraadiga Soomaaliyeed) — until 1991
- Democratic Republic of Madagascar (Repoblika Demokratika Malagasy) — until 1992
- Republic of Ghana — overthrown in 1966
- United Republic of Tanzania (Jamhuri ya Muungano wa Tanzania) — still exists, became a liberal democracy

- Republic of Cuba (Republica de Cuba) — still exists, but socialism is disputed

- Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (Союз Советских Социалистических Республик) — dissolved in 1991
- Mongolian People's Republic — until 1992
- Democratic People's Republic of Korea (조선민주주의인민공화국) — still exists, but socialism is disputed
- People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (جمهورية اليمن الديمقراطية الشعبية) — until 1990
- People's Republic of China (中华人民共和国) — still exists, but socialism is disputed

- People's Republic of Kampuchea (សាធារណរដ្ឋប្រជាមានិតកម្ពុជា) — until 1989
- Socialist Republic of the Union of Burma (မြန်မာ့နည်းမြန်မာ့ဟန် ဆိုရှယ်လစ်စနစ်) — until 1988

- People's Socialist Republic of Albania (Republika Popullore Socialiste e Shqipërisë) — dissolved in the early 1990s
- German Democratic Republic (Deutsche Demokratische Republik) — "reunification" (actually more like an occupation) with the FRG in 1990
- Polish People's Republic (Polska Rzeczpospolita Ludowa) — until 1989
- Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia (Федеративна Народна Република Југославија) — destroyed in a NATO-supported conflict in the 1990s
- Hungarian People's Republic (Magyar Népköztársaság) — until 1989
- Czechoslovak Socialist Republic (Československá socialistická republika) — until 1990
