The Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic was a union republic of the USSR. It was succeeded by the modern state of Russia.
The term also refers to the sovereign predecessor to the Soviet Union which existed in Russia for less than a decade after the 1917 revolution, when it become an entity within the USSR.
