American Exception: Empire and the Deep State is a 2022 book by political scientist Aaron Good that "seeks to explain the breakdown of US democracy" from a "deep politics approach".[1] The book documents the history, especially in the Cold War era, of the American deep state, which has "increasingly dominated [...] the open democratic state and the authoritarian security state."[1] These interventions include "toppling of foreign governments, the launching of aggressive wars, and the political assassinations of the 1960s"[1], such as those of JFK and Martin Luther King, Jr.
