Progressive (from Latin prōgredior "to move forward"), in a political context, refers to groups or entities which are considered to further the collective objectives of humanity, i.e. to carry out "social progress". Leftists use the term in two distinct senses:
- Social progressivism, a term for idealist liberal social-political movements whose goal is to remedy individual social issues, such as racism, and to resolve or reduce inequalities, often allied with leftists
- Progressive forces, a term used in Marxist thought to refer to social classes, political parties, and even states which, in opposition to the forces of reaction, materially foster the development of the productive forces and relations of production, leading ultimately to the conditions for a communist society
